Near Escapes and False WarningsThe following information is taken from NASA reports from pilots who have experienced close calls with CFIT (controlled flight into terrain) and false warnings from GPWS (ground proximity warning system). These reports are from NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System Data. The reports will be updated when they become available.
While this is our opinion, AMSADD cannot guarantee that the crews would have reacted differently. However, they would have had the opportunity to be aware of the MSA and approach information. Ignoring AMSADD would be the same as ignoring an engine fire light.
As you read through the reports, please remember that AMSADD would have kept the crew informed of their present minimum safe altitude and the minimum safe altitude they were heading toward. Most of these NASA reports would not have been written, assuming that the crew would have followed the AMSADD displays.
